If the car starts a DPF regeneration, extend your journey if need be until it has finished the job (takes around 5-10 mins of driving, in my Alfa at least), and give it some beans to help it out
On my first mazda 6 with 2.0 diesel engine, one of the injectors was that bad, that car was stuttering while driving, but the regeneration interval was far from being halved. And consumption at that time was 0.5l higher. What is the 'normal' regeneration interval on mazda 3? 200km?

On my car the DPF automatically regenerates every 150 to 200 miles so on that basis it would probably take a while to hit 400% in normal circumstances. In your case I'd suspect there is another fault causing increased levels of particulates to be produced.
